Movement Building During Times of Change
Purpose’s 2025 Impact Story
What we learned about incubating movements in challenging times

This year, Purpose worked across 12 countries—from Indonesia to Brazil, Kenya to India—partnered with 486 organizations, and reached over a billion people on issues spanning climate, gender justice, and food systems transformation.
2025 has been a year that tested movements worldwide. Devastating USAID cuts, unprecedented humanitarian emergencies, and increasingly chaotic information ecosystems stretched resources and made it harder than ever to cut through the noise. But in this context, we’ve also seen movements endure. This agility isn’t accidental —it’s built on clear audience insights, effective narratives, and welcoming coalitions.

Some examples from our own work that we seeded in the last few years:

The Islamic Climate Movement transformed traditional charitable structures into climate solutions—activating 20 young Muslim clerics as climate leaders and raising over $630,000 through Islamic philanthropy. MOSAIC now evolved into a fully independent organization, proving that movements built on research and community ownership can stand on their own.

The Difference She Makes, has developed a strong regional coalition with the potential to function as global advocates.Within a month, 50 women legal professionals proactively joined the movement. Its Hero Stories series reached 5 million people, sparking intergenerational conversations by centering authentic voices of unseen women leaders.

Meanwhile, Verified for Climate continued to grow from a COVID-19 disinformation response into a network of 77 TikTok creators generating 1.3 billion views this year. Through continuous panel surveys across Brazil, Indonesia, and the UK, the programme adapts in real-time—proving that the most enduring campaigns learn from every interaction. We are very excited with the global recognition for the need to invest in Information Integrity at COP30.

Our 2025 Impact Report highlights additional five catalytic opportunities we will prioritise in the coming year — each representing work where we have begun to seed new, innovative programmes with the potential to contribute to strong and resilient movements:
- A food transition driven by consumers and farmers
- Electrification of medium and heavy duty vehicles with support from drivers & fleet-owners
- Shifting Gender Norms By Challenging Cultural Assumptions
- Activating Young Africans to Shape the Narrative of the Continent
- Building Trust with New Audiences in Europe
