Launching the Global T1D Index

Raising awareness and empowering local advocates to fight Type 1 diabetes

We partnered with JDRF (now known as Breakthrough T1D) to raise awareness of the Global T1D Index and magnify its impact.

Launching the Global T1D Index

Challenge

Over 9 million people globally are affected by Type 1 diabetes, losing 10-15 years of their lives as a result. Despite insulin therapy and blood glucose monitoring being key treatments for almost a century, high costs hinder access in low- and middle-income nations. The Global T1D Index had been created to offer detailed data and simulations of country-specific interventions, but it needed an exciting and effective public launch in order to reach its promise as an advocacy tool.

Strategy

Our strategy was to encourage both individuals and grassroots organizations to engage with the Global TID Index via a new brand, interactive website, advocacy toolkit and awareness campaign. We positioned the index as key to helping the global diabetes community raise awareness and demand action. Plus, through consultations, workshops and a developed suite of resources we collaborated with regional organizations to support their own initiatives.

Creative

We surveyed Type 1 diabetes advocates to shape the brand according to their preferences for tone, visual symbols and colors. Inspired by the blue circle of diabetes awareness, our logo adds a unique twist with an open circle, symbolizing ongoing efforts. We crafted brand elements and guidelines, then designed an interactive website that blends personal stories with clear data. The complementary campaign toolkit is a powerful advocacy tool, merging data, messaging and a variety of promotional materials.

Campaign

For the website, we humanized the data by integrating personal narratives, relatable measurements such as the number of birthdays affected by Type 1 diabetes, and clear data visualizations.

Throughout the project, our close collaboration with essential partners, including Type 1 diabetes organizations and dedicated advocates, was pivotal — allowing us to gain critical insights into where capacity gaps existed and how we could address them.

Impact

Type 1 diabetes affects 9 million+ people globally, yet insufficient support from governments and philanthropists leaves many misconceptions about its impacts. A Global T1D Index existed, but it needed a critical mass of users in order to reach its potential as an advocacy tool.

We developed an engaging brand identity, animated the index data via an interactive website, and ran an awareness campaign to drive users to explore the data for deeper insights. We also curated a host of resources to empower local Type 1 diabetes organizations to spearhead ground-level change initiatives.

“As a member of the T1D community, I know many are not as fortunate as I am to have the resources necessary to live a healthy and fulfilled life. This is why I am so proud that significant progress has been made to understand T1D’s global impact through the T1D Index. We are calling on government and public health decision makers throughout the world to utilize the tool to identify and implement interventions that can change the trajectory of T1D.”
