Starting this January, the monthly 501 Tech NYC event series will be hosted at the Purpose headquarters. 501 Tech NYC is a volunteer-led group affiliated with the Nonprofit Technology Network (NTEN). Events feature experts discussing online campaigns, social impact, digital best practices, and innovative tech tools. Many members of the Purpose team have attended these events in the past, and we look forward to welcoming the 501 Tech community to our office space.

Join us for the first 501 Tech NYC event of the year on Wednesday, January 14th. The event will feature Jay Geneske of the Rockefeller Foundation, who will share the secrets to building an organization with storytelling at its core in “Digital Storytelling for Social Impact.” RSVP now.

501 Tech NYC: Digital Storytelling for Social Impact

Wednesday, January 14, 2015

6:00p.m. – 6:30p.m. Socializing

6:30p.m. – 8:00p.m. Discussion

Purpose

The session:

Stories with purpose don’t just materialize—they’re strategically planned, they’re creatively crafted, and they’re designed to achieve measurable outcomes. We all want our organizations to be better at storytelling, but few have figured out how to really connect it to social impact.

Drawing on lessons learned from The Rockefeller Foundation’s recent landscape study on what it takes to create a storytelling organization, this session will include insights and case studies on building strategy, capacity, content, platforms, and evaluation.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their laptop, smartphone, or tablet so that we can explore a module from Hatch—a concierge-like suite of digital storytelling resources—and start a storytelling strategy to share with your team.

Featured presenter:

Jay Geneske directs The Rockefeller Foundation’s digital strategy to engage internal and external audiences, champion organization-wide collaboration and knowledge sharing, deliver data that informs organization decisions, and pioneer new ways to hear and share innovative ideas and perspectives on serving the needs of poor or vulnerable people in a time of rapid change.

Jay previously served as the Director of Online Communications for Echoing Green, a global nonprofit that provides seed capital and support to early-stage social entrepreneurs. He has also served in digital and brand strategy roles in the cultural sector, including Carnegie Hall, Shedd Aquarium, and Steppenwolf Theatre. His work has been featured in The New York Times, AdAge, Crain’s, Forbes, Stanford Social Innovation Review, and The Chronicle of Philanthropy.

Jay holds two bachelor’s degrees from Drake University and is currently enrolled in the global affairs graduate certificate program at New York University. Follow Jay on Twitter.
