Purpose is thrilled to announce that Ilyse Hogue, former President of NARAL and longtime movement leader, has joined our nearly 200-strong team as our new President. Ilyse will work closely with our CEO and co-founder Jeremy Heimans, and our expanding Partner group of Jon Damon, Corrie Frasier, Simon Goff, Gautam Raju, Keno Sadler, and Kate Swann, to develop Purpose’s strategy and guide our work into a new era.

Hogue is known as a movement leader, innovator and coalition builder across the American progressive movements on issues including reproductive rights, climate change, democracy, and voting rights. In 2016, Hogue made history when she became the first speaker to share her abortion story at the Democratic National Convention. She is also the author of the best-selling book The Lie That Binds.

“We are incredibly excited to welcome Ilyse, who has long been part of the Purpose family and embodies the DNA and best spirit of Purpose, to our leadership team,” said Jeremy Heimans, co-founder and CEO of Purpose. “Ilyse brings not only decades of leadership experience, but also the vision to build and innovate new models to win change across the globe.”

Ilyse is no stranger to Purpose. She was Senior Fellow at Purpose in our early years, advising our campaigns and incubations in our early years and has worked closely with us as a client and partner at key moments, most notably working with Purpose to build the All Access project of reproductive rights, health and justice organizations to defend and expand abortion access.

Ilyse joins Purpose in a time of extraordinary growth, with offices in New York City, London, New Delhi, São Paulo, Seattle, Sydney, and Nairobi and campaigns and labs active all over the world. Over the past two years, Purpose has begun working in more than ten new countries and has welcomed over 70 new members.

Hogue most recently spent eight years as President of NARAL Pro-Choice America, during which she helped transform that renowned legacy organization into a modern-day political and organizing powerhouse, tripling its membership, staff and annual budget in service of advancing state and federal legislation to protect and expand abortion access.

Prior to her work for NARAL, Hogue worked for MoveOn.org, Greenpeace, Rainforest Action Network, Media Matters for America, and the Friends of Democracy PAC.

“As President, I look forward to joining a global team of passionate changemakers. In this moment of overwhelming and cascading global challenges, Purpose is uniquely positioned to be part of the solution. Purpose’s strong commitment to experiment and learn in real time, identify the most impactful strategies for change and apply that learning on behalf of a multitude of cross-sector partners makes this an opportunity to help create impact on so many issues I care passionately about and have worked on in my lifetime,” said Hogue.

In her new leadership role, Ilyse will guide us into our next era, focusing on crafting high-impact strategies and overseeing their execution. She will bring a systems-level approach and a career of cross-movement innovation to evolving Purpose’s model, building on the success of our rapidly growing Labs model and our recent investments in impact measurement and learning.
