#ClimateChangeisReal Reaches 265 Million People on Earth Day 2015

Earth Day 2015 went off with a bang for Here Now, the climate movement accelerator incubated by Purpose.  Here Now’s Real Talk campaign saw groundbreaking engagement that reached 265 million people using the campaign hashtag #ClimateChangeisReal.  Participants shared the message  “#ClimateChangeIsReal. So is ___________”– and completed the phrase with their own individual and creative messages on climate change.

#ClimateChangeisReal was trending in the United States, as people shared original posts, memes, pictures, and videos with positive messages about climate change solutions.

Tons of celebrities, artists, and influential voices got on board, including President Obama, Brad PittPaul McCartney, Mark Ruffalo, Russell Brand, Ian Somerhalder, Richard Branson, Anupam KherThe Lumineers, Joss Whedon, Bill Nye, Jota Quest, Maria Shriver, Anil Kapoor, and Fátima Bernardes.  President Obama’s “#ClimateChangeisReal. So is President Obama’s 3-point game” was a favorite, with over 58,000 retweets.

A huge range of the world’s leading businesses and organizations participated, including Nike, Unilever, IKEA, Mahindra, Natura, VirginGreenpeace, US veterans’ groups, the Catholic Climate Covenant, and many more.

Paul Hilder, Executive Director of Here Now shared his thoughts on the impact of the campaign, when he said, “Most people everywhere know in their heart of hearts that climate change is real. As the signs of danger grow, can we get our act together in time to stop this runaway train? Even I have had my doubts. But they were swept away by a flood of hope this week, as I watched a global conversation blossom: people everywhere have been proclaiming that #ClimateChangeIsReal – and so is humankind’s ability to solve it.”
